The American Legion Utah Boys State Corporation, including the program of instruction under its charter, is conducted by an all-volunteer force.
In general, the assignment of “Counselor” is a highly coveted position and one that is very demanding. Counselors must be able to keep up with 22 to 30 seventeen year old boys for roughly 18 hours a day; be of such personality that they can connect with young men; be willing and able to maintain and remain completely neutral in all things, e.g. politics, religion and any other area where opposing opinions may come into play, a counselor never weighs in on one side or another. With exception of currently serving law enforcement officers, all counselors will undergo a background check and must complete an online two hour course of instruction concerning working with youth before their invitation to attend Boys State is made complete.
Staff assignments are made on an as needed basis. Currently serving Utah Boys State Corporation board members will make up the nucleus of the group. However, on occation, there will be a requirement to add additional volunteers.
