Your first source of financial help should be your local American Legion Post, however there are a number of creative ways that boys typically find in order to help pay their application fee. Some schools actually have some funding that they use to help their students. If your school has funding but not enough to go around, you can still attend Boys State with other funding. Gather the Boys in your school and have car wash, bake sales or any other revenue producing ideas that you can think of. Visit local merchants and businesses, give them a pitch about why they should help you attend Boys State, oftentimes they will help fund some or all of the fee. Work with your local American Legion Post, perhaps there are some odd jobs that you can help them with. Many boys self-fund through help from parents, grandparents or other relatives.
If you’ve tried all the options that you can reasonably think of and are still short on funds, you can apply in writing to the Boys State Foundation at Mr. Bob Jones, 3359 N. 2550 E., Layton, UT 84040 if all those efforts come up short, sent a letter to our office at American Legion Utah Boys State, P.O. Box 187, Kaysville, UT 84037-0187, justify your financial position & what actions you’ve already taken and we’ll make every effort to help you. Examples of situations where someone could justify their need for financial assistance from the Boys State Foundation or the Corporation are: Single parent or immigrant family households, or boys whose parents are out of work and unable to send their sons, or boys who due to family financial constraints find themselves on a school lunch program.
If you’ve retaken the ACT or improved your GPA before attending Boys State bring those new scores with you to Boys State. If improved after completing Boys State: Have your updated official high school transcripts (with ACT and GPA) sealed in an envelope, send or hand-deliver to: WSU Admissions Office, 3885 West Campus Dr. Dept 1137, Ogden, UT 84408-1137.
Once your application is received by our administrator and verified as complete and your payment of $400.00 has been made, if you are one of the first 300 applicants you will receive a welcome to Boys State email notification containing information and instructions. If your application is not part of the first 300 it will be placed in an alternate status and you will be notified as such. Should any of the first 300 officially, in writing withdraw from the course or depending on housing’s ability to accommodate additional boys, alternate candidates will be offered the opportunity to attend based on the order in which their application was received. If you are not contacted to attend as an alternate, your application fee will be returned to whom ever paid it by check.
