Frequently Asked Questions
Are boys allowed to leave Campus?
No. Once checked in, boys are not allowed to leave the campus unless it is an emergency verified by a parent or legal guardian, there are no other exceptions.
Can I receive credit in my government class at my high school for completing Utah Boys State?
Each school varies in whether or not it will apply the Boys State curriculum to credit in government classes. You will need to check with your school counselor/principal to determine what your school’s policy is.
Can I use my scholarship at other Universities, Colleges or Trade Schools?
If you were awarded a Weber State scholarship, you can only use it at Weber State. The SAMSUNG or Private (Needs Based) scholarships can be used at any University, College or Trade Schools.
Do boys have to be descendants of military veterans to be elibile to attend Utah Boys State?

How can I make a financial contribution or donation to Utah Boys State?
The three primary methods of donating are either by Online or

*Contributions to Utah Boys State Foundation may or may not be tax deductible depending on each donor’s individual tax situation.
We recommend consulting with your legal or tax advisor concerning questions of deductibility.
How can I get a refund if I decide to withdraw from the course?
Refund policy: Students that have completed their application and have received a “registered” confirmation email may withdraw and receive a full refund up to midnight April 20, minus electronic processing fee. On this date, beds are reserved, and payment is guaranteed to the university.
Paid up students that withdraw from Utah Boys State between April 21 and midnight May 15 can request a 50% refund, minus electronic processing fee. At this date, in addition to beds being reserved, payment for food for the week-long program is guaranteed to the university.
Refunds will not be issued after May 15, except for a verified emergency e.g. death or serious injury of an immediate family member, or illness of the registered student, verified by a medical professional.
How can I get funding assistance for my application?
Many boys self-fund through help from parents, grandparents or other relatives. If you decide to self-fund or your local American Legion Post helps you, you’re set, if not.
Sponsorships: If you decide to seek funding from other sources, please go to the “Resources” tab on this website, find and print several copies of the sponsor letter.
Take a copy of the letter to as many local businesses as you need to get funding. Briefly explain what Boys State is, why you want to go and what you hope to get from the program.
Good sources: Local banks and credit unions, car dealerships, local chamber of commerce, city or town council, law or legal offices, real estate offices, local merchants, etc.
Your last resource (only take this step if you can verify that you have exhausted the available funding sponsorships) email ubs@utahboysstate.org.
Justify your financial position & what actions you’ve already taken, and we’ll make every effort to help you. Examples of situations where someone could justify their need for financial assistance are: Single parent or immigrant family households, or boys whose parents are out of work and unable to send their sons, or boys who due to family financial constraints find themselves on a school lunch program. If Boys State has any resources, they will be very limited so you may not get help through this avenue.
How can I withdraw from the program?
Refer to the American Legion Utah Boys State Corporation Administrative Policies and Procedures that you read while completing your application. Also see Administrative Policy tab on this home page.
How do I get my three credit hours of Political Science transferred?
How is the Boys State POLS 2920 Weber State college credit defined?
The three semester hours of Weber State University college credit may count
as an elective. It does not translate into a general education POLS credit.
How do I find an American Legion Post in my area?

How do I get my ACT and/or GPA scores updated if I’ve improved them since completing my Boys State Application?
If you’ve retaken the ACT or improved your GPA before attending Boys State bring those new scores with you to Boys State. If improved after completing Boys State: Have your updated official high school transcripts (with ACT and GPA) sealed in an envelope, send or hand-deliver to: WSU Admissions Office, 3885 West Campus Dr. Dept 1137, Ogden, UT 84408-1137.
How do I know that my application is complete/accepted?
After your school counselor and your American Legion (Post) interviews are complete, and then your application is received by our administrator with your payment you will receive a welcome to Boys State email notifying you that your registration is complete. The email will contain information and instructions, when and where to arrive on campus and what to bring.
How do I know that the program is a good value or expense?
The real individual cost is over $750. Thanks to generous donors we work to keep your cost as low as possible. Add in the value of the college credit and the cost is over $1,550.
The core of the program is to gain a better understanding of how government within Utah works from the city, county and state levels and develop leadership, self-confidence and promote civic responsibility in young men.
If you’re thinking of attending college the three semester credit hours of Political Science that you’ll receive at Boys State can be used at any college/university in the country. The cost in time and money of taking this elective course in college would be about nine weeks and cost at least $900.00
If you’re thinking about attending college, Weber State is a first-rate school and your attendance at Boys State offers you a unique and once in a life-time opportunity to obtain scholarships based solely on your GPA, ACT and successfully completion of Boys State. An exceptional value that will go a long way to help you with your higher education goals.
The network / comradery of the Boys State graduates and friendships that you’ll develop during this week will provide untold rewards in your future. Having Utah Boys State Alumni on your resume will be a life-long and significant attribute to your credentials and may mean the difference in obtaining your dream job or maybe the thing that gets you called back for a second interview.
How can I volunteer as a staff member or counselor?
Placement on the staff including counselors is by invitation, we will only fill necessary / needed positions. Drop and email to the address located at the Home page of this web site. Provide your name, phone number, email and mailing address. Indicate whether or not you are a member of one or more, the American Legion, Sons of the Legion, Law Enforcement, First Responder, Fire Fighter or Educator. Also a brief bio about yourself would be helpful. You will be mailed an applicant package to be completed and returned to the President of Utah Boys State. Finally, you will be notified whether or not we have an assignment for you as soon as possible but not later than 30 days prior to the class commencement.
I have printed my application and realize I have made a mistake, how do I correct it?
Once you print your application you cannot reenter the system. If the error is minor for example spelling errors in areas such as essay responses you can make pen changes to the application. If you think the error(s) are critical or you’re not sure, send an email to utahboysstate@gmail.com in the subject line please put “Boys State Admin” tell us who you are and describe as accurately as you can what needs to be corrected.
If my school or Legion Post doesn’t actively support Boys State can I still attend?
Yes. Complete your application as best as you can, attempt to get your GPA & ACT scores from your school, also attempt to get an interview with your local Legion Post. Use this web site to drop us an email, identify yourself, tell us the name of your school and your local Legion Post number and we will help work you through the process of attending our program.
What are the steps in the application process?
The answer is best explained in the sequence of events:
The applicant learns enough about the program to be interested in applying.
At lisab91.sg-host.com click on the register tab and you will be redirected to the Weber State University registration portal.
Begin the process of applying; once you complete the entry level information, name and email addresses and continue, you will be sent an automatic email with information about what you’ll need to complete the registration. Note, you can leave and reenter your application any time until you decide/select print at which time you’ll no longer have access to open your registration again. If you find a critical error in your printed application, follow the FAQ guidance provided on this website.
Once you’ve completed all the fields on the application you will be prompted to print it out.
Once printed get your parents/legal guardian(s) to sign the application in all the applicable places, attach copies of your health insurance cards.
Meet with your high school counselor for an interview, verification of GPA and ACT scores. Can’t get interview, follow the FAQ guidance provided on this website.
Arrange an interview with your local American Legion Post representative for an interview. The legion representative will check to ensure your application is complete. The representative will either collect your application along with your share of the attendance fee or will return the application to you for mailing to American Legion Utah Boys State, PO Box 187, Kaysville, UT 84037-0187. Don’t forget to include funding. If you can’t get an interview or cannot find an American Legion Post in your area, follow the FAQ guidance provided on this website.
Once your application and the required funding is received at the above address and is confirmed complete, you will receive an email welcoming you to Boys State as well as important information that you’ll need to consider as you prepare for a once in a lifetime experience.
What are the Weber State University rules to maintain my scholarship?
There are different levels of Scholarships awarded by WSU, visit https://www.weber.edu/FinancialAid/resident.html for specific detail about Scholarships.
When should I expect to receive my Samsung or Private scholarship?
The Samsung scholarship is awarded by the American Legion National Headquarters, visit www.legion.org/scholarships.
You will be given five years in which to claim your private scholarship. Shortly after Boys State graduation you will receive a letter from the Boys State Foundation that will provide the criteria by which you may claim your scholarship. When you present a claim you will have to provide proof of registration at an institution of higher learning and that institution will have to provide a letter to the Foundation asking that the scholarship be awarded.
When will I receive my city assignment?
You will receive an email in May that will contain your assigned city. All assignments are random, boys do not get to pick.
Out of state students, what high school should I check on my registration?
Students should select: OUT OF STATE
How do I get an official Weber State transcript?
The Official Transcript is handled at a clearing house not on campus.
You should be able to log into the Weber State portal and see your unofficial transcript. If you do not know your login, call 801-626-7777 for IT assistance.
To order an official transcript, you need to go through the National Student Clearinghouse. Please visit https://www.weber.edu/records to get the process started.
